Sorrowful Note to Sister about Son's Passing
From Atlanta on May 10, 1864 Thomas wrote to his sister Eveline in Athens:
Dear Eveline,
Tell mother that our dear little Johnny is no more with us. He died last night at 11 o'clock. He was taken Sunday, the day before, very suddenly and severely. The disease is pronounced an affection of the brain. If you remember when Marcellus died you can imagine precisely how Johnny was affected. My sweet little Johnny I hope is now an angel. May we all so live that we shall meet him again. Mary is not well - nothing serious I hope. Tell mother I will send her some rice in a few days.
Affectionately,
Thomas
