Thomas was most likely born in Olgethorpe County where his parents were married and was named for his maternal great-grandfather. Thomas married Mary King and by 1860 they were living in Atlanta and had two children , Edward King, age seven, and Martha Mood, age three (1860 Fulton County, GA Census.) In 1861, Thomas and mary became parents of twin boys, Charles Benjamin and John, followed in 1862 by a daughter, Mary Gertrude.
